In my experience, if there's anything worth than an invasion of aliens, it's an invasion of paper aliens. And that's exactly what happens in Inkvaders, an original and fun side-scrolling, Martian-blasting adventure game.
The object of Inkvaders is to rid the World of aliens by blasting them with your gun. In order to help you, you also have a jet pack which lets you fly over the Martians. The controls are very simple and are housed at the bottom of the screen in the form of two directional buttons, a rocket boost button, and a fire button.
Inkvaders is remarkably engrossing right from the off. I advise you take the training level first though, in order to get to grips with the controls. The great thing about the game is the power-ups. You earn cash by collecting coins or blasting aliens, and you can then exchange this for weapons, ammo, health and upgrades from one of the vending machines scattered around the levels. The more you power up, the more effective you are, and therefore the more money you make.
The graphics in Inkvaders are highly original. The characters are designed to look as if they are cut out drawings, and the jerky animation reflects this. When your character dies, a 'real' hand even appears on the screen to pick him up and stick him back on the screen. Inkvaders also boasts some fun sound effects and a dramatic soundtrack. You can however, opt to use an iPod playlist as your backing track.
Inkvaders offers high-octane, frantic gameplay, especially when you activate the 'Rush' mode and prompt waves of aliens to fly at you at great speed. The main downside of the game is that it gets pretty repetitive, especially as all the invaders are the same.
But if you're looking for a fix of fast and furious fun, Inkvaders delivers in abundance.
